All programs are paused due to the COVID-19 Pandemic.
We are excited to announce that the WeRMac Program is back for the 2019-20 School Year!
An overnight experience at McMaster to show students from urban school they belong at university!
2018-19 School Year – Grade 7 students from Cathy Wever School headed to McMaster in the spring to McMaster for an over night experience of university life in a pilot project designed to show them university is well within their reach.
The pupils are coming by city bus from Cathy Wever School on Wentworth Street North, in a community where many face the challenges of low income, non-traditional family structures, high dropout rates and newness to life in Canada.
While on campus, the Cathy Wever students will stay in a student residence, eat at student dining facilities, tour attractions such as the planetarium and the student-run radio station, hike along wooded trails, tackle the outdoor climbing tower, see a lacrosse game at Ron Joyce Stadium and learn about the academic and social aspects of university life.
Having the pupils use public transit to get to McMaster is meant to reinforce how easy it is to travel from their neighborhood to the university.
“Some of these children might not otherwise realize that a university education is an option for them,” Laura Laverty, Public Health Nurse
We want all those students who are able and desiring a post-secondary education of some sort to know that it’s possible, and we want to break down the barriers to them.”
Thanks to the Hamilton Community Foundation and ABACUS for funding this opportunity in 2018!
